This week, I was introduced to Business Architecture (BA), one of the four main domains of Enterprise Architecture. I also spent some time applying my learning to analyze my district’s BA. After taking a close look, I believe that my organization has strengths and areas of growth in its BA. This past year, we have a new Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Business and Support Services. Soon after they started their new position, both leaders took a close look at the state of the district. Since then, these two leaders have made some changes to the business side that are already showing improvements. One of those improvements is the restructuring of the business and support services. Creation of a few positions have occurred to maximize services in this department. Improvements can also be seen in the Facilities and Maintenance and Operations Departments. A 5 Year Master Plan was created and adopted by the Board and projects have already started throughout the district.
However, the district’s BA also has some areas of growth. One of those areas is our current Technology Plan. It has not been updated to reflect the many changes that have occurred since is was created and adopted. This takes me to another area of growth which is communication. This Plan is accessible to the community, but is not reflective of the district’s current technology services. At the same time, I see it may be difficult to evaluate, plan and make decisions for the future.
Considering the above mentioned, I believe that we, as a district, should invest some time and effort to revisit our current BA, identify areas in need of improvement or updates, develop a plan for maintaining the BA and creating a committee to lead these efforts from this point. We are making strides in the right direction, so strengthening our BA will only increase our efficiency and effectiveness.
