What’s my sentence? “She showed students they mattered.”
Was I better today, than yesterday? No, but I'm going to keep working.
At the end of Drive, there is a link (www.danpink.com/drivesurvey) for an online assessment, Are you Type I or TypeX? After rating the level to which I agree or disagree to 30 statements, my results revealed that I am “mostly Type I.” I can live with that, for the moment. Where do I go from here? How do become “fully” or “completely” Type I. As a coach, communication has been one of my biggest challenges, as I’m getting to know all the teachers at all the sites and become familiar with their personalities and learning styles. After reading Drive, I think that I have some tools that can help me in the area. I recognize that I need to expand my knowledge, so I plan to read Pink’s book, A Whole New Mind and look over the recommended book list provided in Drive. I will also use the learning for the other readings and videos I was introduced to in EDL 680. The timing of reading this book could not have been more perfect. I started working with teachers last week and classes begin in two weeks. So, I feel a little more confident about collaborating with my colleagues, because I have a stronger understanding on what motivates people, the difference between Type I and Type X Motivation and especially realizing the important role that Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose have in an organization. This new knowledge will also prevent me from taking things personally, but rather reflect and attempt to understand and listen. Also, I’m considering finding a platform to share this information to teachers to help make instructional decisions that will increase student motivation.
I’m very satisfied with my selection for this project and plan to recommend it to all my colleagues.
