Needs and Opportunities: I live in Calexico, California, a small border town, where 4+ month long summers with 105 degree days are normal. The only physical outdoor activity one can engage in is swimming. My problem is that I can’t swim and every attempt made has only caused my fear to grow.
Audience/Team: If successful, I will benefit from this project, but at the end, it could also include others. My audience will include my blog readers, other adult beginner swimmers, social media followers and classmates.
My team consists of my daughter, Nancy, and a childhood friend, Veronica. Nancy has agreed to take on the roles of my instructor and cheerleader. Veronica has graciously offered her pool for my underwater adventure and to be part of my support system.
Timeline: My timeline for my 20time project is 5 weeks, beginning June 22 and continuing to July 27, and possibly longer. Every week, I will reflect on my progress and determine next steps.
Product: Each week I will publish a blog documenting my learning for that week, research, next steps and progress towards achieving my goal. I will also be creating a collection of my research. If possible, I would also like to include pictures and video.
Reality Check: My priority is confirming access to a pool. I will also need swim gear such as goggles, swim wear, paddle boards and possibly more as I begin my research. I will also need to have a serious conversation with my daughter, my instructor, to develop a plan of action and find time in both of our busy schedules to create a calendar for swim times.
Conclusion: Support, encouragement and cheering from my family, friends and classmates will be greatly needed and much appreciated. I don’t consider myself a risk-taker, especially not in my personal life. Many people consider me to be guarded and reserved. If I overcome this fear and learn to swim, I feel that it will give me a confidence boost and have a positive impact on how I view and tackle future challenging situations.
